Argentina is located in the southern cone of South America, in an area of almost 3.8 million square kilometres and is located between latitude 22º and 55º. Its length of 2,800 km makes it a vast land where you can find tropical altiplano weather in the north, low and grassy pampas in the centre of the country, a huge mesa in the middle of Patagonia, huge mountains on the west, and beaches and cliffs on the east side.
How to get here:
The main gateway is the International Airport of Ezeiza “Ministro Pistarini” (EZE). Most of the European, North American and Latin American carriers fly to Buenos Aires. For British passengers the most direct route is via British Airways which offers a direct flight with one stop in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
If you need to connect to a domestic flight, you might need to change airports to the domestic airport (Aeroparque Jorge Newbery – AEP). There are buses and van services that can transfer you from one airport to the other . You can find these services in the arrival hall at Ezeiza International Airport, once you have passed customs.
There is an extensive network of long distance buses that cover all the Argentine territory. The main bus station is located near Retiro train station, at Ramos Mejía 1680, Capital Federal.
There is a network of trains that mostly cover Buenos Aires city and its surrounding, with a couple of lines travelling a little further, as for example, there is one train travelling to Tucumán (NOA Ferrocarriles, Retiro Station, phone (011) 4312-9506/13); one to Mar del Plata (Ferrobaires, (011) 4304-0028/0031/0038), and another one travelling from Viedma to Bariloche (Tren Patagónico (http://www.trenpatagonico-sa.com.ar/index.htm#)
Time of the year to travel:
Remember that in the southern hemisphere the seasons run opposite from those in the northern hemisphere. From October to April is a good time to visit Patagonia, if you are planning to visit beaches, the time to go is from November until March, if you plan to ski, the ski season runs from mid-June through mid-October. Winter is also the best time to visit the northern and littoral zones of the north, as it rarely rains and the subtropical temperatures are a little bit cooler. You can enjoy Buenos Aires at its best during spring and autumn.
Summer holidays run from early December through the end of February/beginning of March, and during July there are the winter holidays. If you want to avoid the crowds, try to travel on the shoulder seasons.
